Whenever you think about acne, you must admit you will at least be reminded of hormones! Hormones and acne are old friends and bosom buddies. In fact, they can hardly do without each other.
Ever present danger of Acne. Acne can strike at any time in your life, whether you are a child, a teenager, an adult or a senior citizen. At every stage, you can bet that hormones will have some part to play. You can probably count on having your own special tale of woe, depending on how badly you have been scarred by your encounter with acne.
So let us take a look at how hormones can affect acne in a variety circumstances. Believe it or not, even babies have not managed to escape the menace of acne. That sure does seem a shame considering they are not even able to make themselves understood. Acne in babies is caused by the transfer of maternal hormones to the baby through the placenta, which stimulates the secretion of oil in the skin.
Acne is also evident in children before they reach puberty. At this time, girls are more prone to the condition than boys, while they are more or less equally affected by acne through the adolescent years. In adulthood, it is women rather than men who suffer from acne more often. Teenagers and young adults make up the bulk of acne sufferers. All of these inclinations towards acne among the different age groups are dictated by variations of hormonal activity.
References to hormonal acne can actually be rather misleading because nearly all forms of acne are affected by erratic hormone levels. This is true in the case of both males and females. Although generally speaking, the layman tends to regard testosterone as a male hormone and estrogen and progesterone as female hormones, in fact both males have a combination of all three hormones.
The appearance of acne is mainly caused by fluctuating levels of testosterone. When the levels of these hormones are high, secretion by the sebaceous glands also increases. This in turn encourages the formation of acne.
Teenage acne woes. Then again, it is the adolescent years, when hormonal activity is high, that are most commonly associated with the appearance of acne. That is why acne is particularly prevalent among teenagers, whose skin tends to be greasy. Since males have a higher concentration of male hormones, the acne problem is more acute in teenage boys. This is also the reason why men who use anabolic steroids tend to have eruptions of acne on the torsos and faces.
Acne woes for women. As far as women are concerned, acne that is induced by hormonal activity is most often linked to the menstrual cycle, when levels of estrogen are at their highest. Increased levels of progesterone following ovulation result in increased secretion from the sebaceous glands, making the skin greasy, clogging pores and encouraging the formation of acne. Acne may even trouble women after menopause. At this time, while estrogen levels have begun to recede, testosterone levels are high.
Acne and hormonal changes. There are a few telltale signs that will indicate whether your acne is the result of hormonal changes. Acne that breaks out for the first time in adulthood is one such indicator. A menstrual cycle that tends to be irregular is another. Other pointers include a greasy appearance to the face, which is the result of excessive secretion from the sebaceous glands, and the growth of hair in odd parts of the body.
It is evident therefore that there is a clear link between hormonal activity and the appearance of acne. Even the appearance of acne in the last three months of pregnancy has been attributed to hormonal imbalance. The use of oral contraceptives to regulate the activity of both male and female hormones has been effective in slowing down the activity of the sebaceous glands. However, this is not generally considered a treatment option for men with acne.
It does appear that acne and hormones will be friends for life. We will just have to do the best we can to live with the consequences!

As if it’s not bad enough to deal with less-than-ideal skin, but now you’re supposed to live without chocolate, too? I’ve got good news?chocolate doesn’t cause acne. You don’t have to deny yourself the occasional candy bar in order to stave off a break-out.
Since we’re on the subject of chocolate, let’s tackle the “certain foods cause acne” myth. Simply put, there is no scientific evidence to back up this claim. Not only is the chocolate thing untrue, so is the “no greasy foods” rule. Greasy foods aren’t great for us for other reasons, but some fries or a slice of pizza isn’t going to bring on or worsen acne. If you’ve noticed that a particular food truly does cause you to break out, then you can, and probably should, avoid it. But for most people, changing your diet isn’t necessary.
Common myth #2?if you break out, it means you’re not washing your face thoroughly enough or frequently enough. Like the forbidden foods, this statement is also false. Well, I should clarify. Of course it’s necessary to wash your face daily (probably twice daily) and use the over-the-counter products that have proven successful for your skin type. But over-washing, and you really can over wash your face, is only going to aggravate your condition. Dirt and oils are not the causes of acne. On a related note, you don’t have to stop wearing make-up. Many young adults still face the occasional unwelcome pimple. By using nonacnegenic or noncomedogenic make-ups, you can cover up your blemishes without potentially causing more.
Here’s another myth that might offer a short-term solution but could create future long-term problems. A lot of people think that tanning beds and/or sun exposure will help with their acne. It’s true that a tan will temporarily mask the appearance of acne, but it’s more of a cosmetic quick-fix than a cure. Plus, you have to keep in mind the increased risk of skin cancer that unprotected exposure to the sun can cause.
If you’re facing a lot of daily stress (and who isn’t?), you might have been told that it is contributing to your acne. Yet again, this is just a myth. The common stresses of your daily life aren’t a major cause of acne. However, some anti-stress prescriptions have acne as a potential side-effect. If you’re facing this particular problem, you should definitely talk to your doctor right away about ways to fix it.

This problem is surely not the work of a vengeful sorcerer. Acne vulgaris is what this most common skin disorder in the United States is scientifically called. Statistics has it that 15 million people in US alone are afflicted with acne. It is an embarrassing problem among teenagers. But this condition is not only limited to those awkward years. Adult acne is also prevalent, especially among people in the age group of 25 to 40.
Acne is a disease that resulted from the accumulation of sebum, a highbrow term for oil, underneath the skin. When this happens and the desquamation (human’s way of molting) process goes wrong, the pores become clogged. Aggravation will continue and soon infection sets in. A bad bug called Propionibacterium acnes causes this infection. Overproduction of oil and mismanagement of the process of shedding cells equals bunged pores. Clogged pores plus P. acnes, the scoundrel, equals breakout. Those pesky zits are produced just as easy as that.
One of the pushing forces that may cause the occurrence of acne includes the elevation of levels of testosterone among adolescents. No, it’s not Toblerone misspelled. Androgen is a hormone produced in high levels among males. This is the reason behind the worse cases of acne among teenage boys more than girls.
Adult acne is called acne rosacea. It is characterized by the following: unsightly thick, red skin on the nose and cheeks, pus-filled blisters, small red bumps, and small red blood vessels seen on the skin surface. It is more commonly linked to increased levels of stress. Isn’t it interesting how the body reacts to this stimulus? NOT. When exhausted, like Gizmo getting wet, our skin could actually give birth to little monsters! Though they are not as troublesome as gremlins, they could be just as annoying as well. Seriously, pimples can be difficult to deal with, and can cause depression and anxiety in an adult the same way it can in a teen. Pressure from work and family responsibilities is thought to possibly affect the normal balance of our hormones. Aside from stress-triggered hormonal imbalance, hot foods alcohol consumption, and smoking are also considered to exacerbate adult acne. This may help you reconsider your food preferences and habits.

In severe cases, consulting a dermatologist would best help in dealing with adult acne. The dermatologist may prescribe an antibiotic, vitamin A derivative like Isotretinoin or other acne drug available. More women may be afflicted with adult acne than men. Pregnancy is another story if you are prescribed anti-acnes, especially Isotretinoin.
Proper skin care may not guarantee a flawless complexion. But a good skin care regimen may aid in warding off bacteria that worsen adult acne. If you love scrubbing for its squeaky-clean feel, think twice. It can render more damage to your already-blemished skin.
Another hint especially for women: use NON-COMEDOGENIC products. Non-comedogenic basically means anything that does not clog skin pores or cause acne. Do your homework and look for as many non-comedogenic versions of the skin care products you use. It’s worth it, you’ll see.

Lots of us have blemish-prone skin. Or, as dermatologists call it – ACNE. Derms are reporting as much as 70% of their patients now are seeking help with their persistent blemishes. Many patients are seeking both blemish and anti-aging help at the same time! Say, what?
Blemished skin can profoundly affect our social and professional lives. It can cause us to withdraw from others, avoid relationships, and hold back on seeking that next job promotion. Our entire self esteem can be completely wrapped around our inability to control the way our skin looks. Adult suffers are taking this problem very seriously.
For most blemish sufferers, however, the news in good. Even though there is no cure for acne, we CAN safely control and manage the breakouts. And you DO want to manage and control them – otherwise you’ll experience post-acne complications such as discoloration of the skin (brown spots from previous blemishes) and worst of all – scarring.
Treatments for acne have significantly evolved over the years. We’ve tried all sorts of remedies that failed. But with more and more people demanding blemish control, we finally have some proven solutions that work. No more spot treatments (they didn’t work), no more sun lamps or heavy alcohol toners (they just dried our skin out), and no more blaming the person who’s suffering with bad skin (it’s their SKIN that’s the problem, not the person).
Smart science tells us that if we treat our entire face, consistently every morning and every night, with the right formulations, we can manage most blemish-prone skin problems. The formulations must contain only non-comedogenic ingredients. A blemish is simply a clogged pore, so we can’t use ingredients that clog the pores on our skin. Products must first – calm the skin’s irritations (botanicals like chamomile and aloe are the best), secondly – unclog the pores and eliminate the plug of oil and bacteria, and third – gently exfoliate the skin to remove dead skin that can clog the pores.
Sometimes all you need is a routine of twice per day using purely botanically-based skin care products to get the desired results. In most cases, you may only need to use the medicated products for a short while, until your skin is cleared, and then you can gradually change your regimen back to purely botanical. If you find your skin flaring up again, you can go back on the medicated products as needed.

Many people are very concerned about the complexion and health of their skins. Whether its acne, an unwanted mole, warts or any type of skin problem, we try to employ different creams and pills hoping that this would produce a clearer, finer skin. However, it doesn’t really take expensive skin products to get the skin you want. In fact, it would only take a few minor lifestyle changes to guarantee a flawless complexion.
#1: Employ a routine for facial care
Depending on your skin type, cleansers, moisturizer and creams could benefit growing acne. However, this does not mean that you automatically have to use ones. Ask the opinion of a dermatologist first before deciding to buy complex skin care products. What is important in skin care is the hygiene. Always keep your face clean and try to wipe your face with a gentle cleanser at least twice a day.
This would help get rid of the skin-problem causing bacteria that might reside in your skin because of the dirt. If you put on make-up every day, never fail to remove it thoroughly before going to sleep. Leaving make up on would only clog your pores, resulting into an overnight pimple breakout. When shaving – whether male or female, make sure that your strokes follow the direction of hair growth. This would not necessarily stop the pimples from growing, but would minimize the development of rashes.
#2: Use a loofa
A sponger or a scrubber could be used to exfoliate or remove dead skin cells. This would help prevent pore clogging which could lead to pimples. However, don’t attempt to exfoliate your skin everyday because thoroughly scrubbing the skin might provoke irritation and rashes. At least twice a week is enough for an exfoliating routine. Note that a loofa must only be used on the body and not on the face. This is because the skin on the face is much more sensitive hence; it could react more strongly to a vigorous scrubbing.
#3: Food and Water
A healthy diet usually promotes a healthy skin. Specific foods can reflect strongly to a person’s skin health – most especially if you are allergic to that food. The issue of chocolate also comes to mind. There are those who believe that chocolate are bad for the skin, and then there are those who oppose the idea. If you love chocolate and not sure about its effect on your complexion, then it might be best to cancel out “possible” negative effects by eating more fruits and vegetables.
Water is like the oil that keeps the bodily functions running smoothly. It helps flush out toxins from our body and prevents dehydration. Water has been known to produce a number of benefits including a healthy skin. The usual amount drunk everyday should be 8 glasses of water. However, please don’t confuse water with any other liquid. Colas and sodas contain sugar and other additives that may be detrimental to skin health. Pure, unmixed water is still best.
#4: Get enough ZZZ’s
Sleep is a very important part of a person’s health and is the most basic form of relaxation known to man. Evidence shows that a buildup of stress can result into overactive sebaceous glands which produce the oil. However, it’s not just sleep that could account for healthy skin (although 8 hours a day is vital), you could also try relaxing in various way without resorting to sleep. Prop your feet up, watch a movie, read a book or have someone massage your feet. The feet is often the most neglected yet most abuse body part so having someone pamper and give it a good rub down will be utmost luxury.
#5: Avoid too much sun
Too much sun can cause sunburn, making your skin feel red and inflamed. Try to minimize sun exposure as much as possible. If you’re under the sun for long periods of time, then it might be best to protect your skin by wearing a hat.

Conventional wisdom used to say that your diet (eating chocolate or greasy foods) would result in an unwanted acne breakout. Later skin professionals and dermatologists learned that there is no proven scientific connection between acne and food. But does what you eat really have a direct influence on the status of your face?
The answer is ‘no’, a bad food diet does not ‘directly’ cause an acne breakout. But, as most doctors will tell you, what you choose to put in your body will have a definite effect on your health, including your skin health. Excessive caffeine, sugary foods, and greasy, fatty snacks will all have a negative effect on our overall health. And if your skin is particularly susceptible to acne, maintaining a poor diet will definitely not help the situation. A bad food diet can therefore have an ‘indirect’ effect!
Choosing foods that are high in sugar, fat content, and refined carbohydrates can all be damaging to your skin health. Studies have shown that too much sugar and refined carbohydrates in your diet can lead to a surge in insulin. This can create the condition known as IGF-1, where an increase in insulin creates the over-production of male hormones. And excessive male hormones can produce an excess of sebum, the greasy stuff that can clog your pores, attract bacteria, and create an environment conducive to acne! IGF-1 is also believed to cause keratinocytes to multiply, which can wreak havoc on skin.
Saturated fats are the bad guys of the food world. Doctors have been warning of the health consequences of consuming trans fats and saturated fats. The negative consequences of saturated fats on the body are a weakening the immune system, promoting inflammation, and for those prone to acne breakouts, raising the skin’s oil production level.
