There are all kinds of creams for getting rid of dry skin on the market. Probably all of them will appear to work – in that your skin feels moist and soft after you apply the product.

But there are a few things you need to know about some of the ingredients used in skin creams because long term, they actually dry your skin out! Understanding what’s what is a good way to make sure you’re using something that not only works today, but works to change the dry condition of your skin long term.

Dry Skin Cream Ingredients to stay away from

Most of the topical moisturizing creams contain synthetically manufactured chemical ingredients. Some of them probably aren’t bad for you (but they certainly don’t bring any health benefits) while some of them actually do cause damage over the long term.

Mineral oil is a prime example. This is a base ingredient in the making of most of the big brand creams for getting rid of dry skin. It is a petroleum-based substance and it is used because it is very cheap and it does trap moisture – when you put a cream with mineral on your skin will feel moist, hydrated and smooth.

But mineral oil does not provide any positive value to the skin. Prolonged use actually dries your skin out because what it is doing is drawing existing moisture in your skin to the surface (which is why your skin feels hydrated to the touch) and acting as a barrier so moisture won’t be released.

Problem is, it doesn’t let anything else out either – including dirt and grime or other substances that may clog your pores. Many people get acne and blemish issues as a result.

Alcohol based ingredients are the same. Isopropyl, methanol, ethanol, benzyl alcohol and ethyl alcohol are all ingredients you’ll find in many dry skincare products.

Now let’s talk about the effective moisturizers

So how do you find creams for getting rid of dry skin that will work? Look for products that contain natural ingredients and can penetrate all seven layers of your skin, hydrating at each level and delivering nutrients that will allow your skin to regain a healthy moisture level for the long term.

Shea butter is one of the most effective natural moisturizers to be found; it helps in softening the skin and has a soothing effect as well. Furthermore, shea butter helps in reducing blemishes and age spots, thus working to give the skin a flawless complexion as well as hydrating at all levels. It penetrates deep into the inner layers of the skin without causing a greasy effect.

Macadamia oil is another wonder moisturizer. It also gets absorbed very quickly and helps in replenishing the oils that the skin has lost during the day.

Another powerful moisturizer is Avocado oil. In addition to its deep moisturizing qualities, it contains all kinds of vitamins and nutrients that help the skin become supple and healthy.

There are many creams for getting rid of dry skin out there. But not all are created equal. Educate yourself and get an understanding of what some of the ingredients of these products actually do so you can pick the one that’s right for you.
