Acne Solutions – Myths and Truths

Hundreds of acne solutions are available to those who suffer from pimples. With so many products and modern processes for getting acne-free skin, it is not surprising that people get confused on what to use. Worse, they could become victims of fraudulent marketing and be lured into using products and techniques that are not suitable and might even cause adverse effects.

To separate acne solutions truths from myths, here are some pointers.

Myth: Toothpaste can cure acne.
Truth: Nope! It can minimize the appearance of inflammation overnight, but it cannot “cure” acne. The condition is caused by clogged pores, and applying toothpaste on it might get the pores even more clogged. However, toothpaste does minimize the redness and the height of the bump, but it’s not a long-term solution.

Myth: Washing the face several times a day will keep the pimple away.
Truth: It depends on how you define the term “several.” If it’s around seven or 10 times (or more), then it’s skin suicide! Excessive washing can slough off the natural oil of the skin and diminish its natural protection against bacteria. It becomes worse if the facial wash or soap you are using is a strong one. The ideal number is between two to three times a day, even if you have oily skin. The most important thing to remember is not to sleep without washing your face first.

Myth: The sun is the best natural cure for acne.
Truth: Not true. Exposing your skin to the sun will only damage it and you will not only have pimples, but wrinkles, dry skin, sunburn and a host of other skin-related worries. The skin does need a bit of sun, but only the sunlight during mornings, say 6AM to 8AM. Anytime beyond these hours and the sunlight will do more harm than good.

Myth: Not eating spicy foods will prevent breakouts.
Truth: Not necessarily. Unless you consume chili and peppered steaks by the bucket, spicy food is not bad. Of course, as in everything, eating spicy dishes should be done in moderation. Spicy food does cause the pores to look bigger, particularly if you’ve eaten a lot and the food is really hot. But unless eating spicy food is done regularly and excessively, there is no harm in it.

Myth: Pimples are genetic and cannot be avoided.
Truth: Not yet proven. Although it has been suspected, there is yet to be a conclusive study to cement this claim. However, a person born to a family whose members have acne should not be surprise if he or she eventually acquires this condition. But keeping your face clean, eating right and avoiding pimple-causing habits will likely give you a better chance of keeping your face zit-free.
